How I Try to Ball With the Big Boys as a Junior Cloud Engineer
Starting as a junior in a team of experienced cloud engineers is overwhelming – but also a great opportunity. Christoph shares his strategies for learning fast, staying motivated, and asking the right questions.
A Junior's Survival Guide to a World Full of Experts
Four months ago, I started as a Junior Cloud Native Engineer without knowing what cloud-native truly meant. What followed was a steep, rewarding learning curve.
Don't Survive – Thrive
Standing in a technical discussion you barely understand is daunting. My strategy: write down every unfamiliar term, look it up later, and build surface-level understanding before going deeper.
Rule I set for myself: if you can't ask a specific question, you haven't thought about it long enough.
The Triple C: Colleagues, Culture, Communication
Having experienced colleagues who want to help you grow professionally is pure gold. Listen to them. If your company culture doesn't provide mentorship – demand it. Being left alone as a junior is the hardest scenario.
Communicating what you need – more support, more learning time – and asking for honest feedback consistently accelerates development.
Sit Down, Be Humble
The race is long, very long. Save your endurance. Be patient, stay consistent, and take breaks when needed. Curiosity about where you'll be in six months is a great motivator.
And if you want a great junior experience from day one – you're welcome to join our team.
